Island Intellects ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting the personal information of our users. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use the Island Intellects platform — including our website, practice quiz tools, and tutor booking services. By using Island Intellects, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Data We Collect
We collect information that is necessary to provide and improve the Island Intellects service. The types of data we collect include:
Account Information
- Name and email address (provided during registration)
- Password (stored in hashed, encrypted form — never in plain text)
- Account type: student, parent, or tutor
- Grade level (for students)
Usage & Learning Data
- Quiz results, scores, and answer history
- Subjects and topics practised
- Session timestamps and time spent on the platform
- Tutor booking history and session notes (where applicable)
Payment Information
- Payment information for paid plans is collected and processed directly by Stripe. We do not store full credit card numbers or sensitive payment details on our servers.
- We retain transaction records (plan type, amount, date) for billing purposes.
Technical Data
- Browser type, operating system, and device type
- IP address and approximate location (country/region)
- Pages visited and features used within the platform
How We Use Your Data
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- Providing the service: Creating and managing your account, enabling practice quizzes, and facilitating tutor bookings.
- Tracking progress: Generating progress reports, identifying weak areas, and personalising the practice experience for each student.
- Matching with tutors: Sharing relevant profile information (first name, subjects needed, grade level) with tutors you choose to book.
- Communicating with you: Sending account-related emails (confirmations, password resets, session reminders). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
- Improving the platform: Analysing aggregated, anonymised usage data to improve question quality, identify platform issues, and develop new features.
- Processing payments: Facilitating subscription billing through Stripe.
Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored securely on Firebase / Google Cloud infrastructure, which is internationally recognised for its security standards. All data transmitted between your browser and our servers is encrypted using TLS (HTTPS). Data stored on our servers is encrypted at rest.
We implement access controls to ensure that only authorised personnel can access personal data, and only to the extent necessary to perform their role. We regularly review our security practices to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.
While we take all reasonable precautions, no system is completely immune to security risks. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately at learn@islandintellects.com.
Third-Party Services
We use a small number of carefully selected third-party services to operate the platform:
- Stripe: Handles all payment processing for subscriptions. Stripe is PCI-DSS compliant. When you enter payment information, it is submitted directly to Stripe — not to Island Intellects servers. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy.
- Firebase (Google): Provides authentication (login), real-time database, and hosting infrastructure. Firebase processes data in accordance with Google's data processing terms and GDPR commitments.
We do not share your personal data with any other third parties, including advertisers, data brokers, or analytics companies beyond what is described above.
Children's Privacy
Island Intellects serves students of all ages, including minors preparing for Common Entrance/CPEA exams. We take the privacy of younger users seriously.
- Accounts for minors are created and managed by a parent or guardian. By creating an account for a child, the parent or guardian consents to the collection and use of their child's data as described in this policy.
- A student's learning data (quiz results, progress) is only accessible to the student themselves and their linked parent account.
- We do not display advertising to any users on the platform, including minors.
- We do not share student data with tutors beyond what is necessary to facilitate a booked session (first name and subjects being studied).
If you believe a minor's data has been collected without appropriate parental consent, please contact us at learn@islandintellects.com and we will take prompt action to address the concern.
Data Retention & Deletion
We retain your personal data for as long as your account remains active or as needed to provide you with the service. If you stop using Island Intellects, your data is retained for a period of up to 12 months to allow for reactivation, after which it may be deleted or anonymised.
You have the right to request deletion of your account and all associated personal data at any time. To submit a deletion request, email us at learn@islandintellects.com with the subject line "Account Deletion Request". We will process your request within 30 days.
Please note that some data may be retained beyond deletion in anonymised, aggregated form (e.g., for platform analytics) or where required by law (e.g., financial records).
Cookies
Island Intellects uses a minimal number of cookies. We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
- Authentication cookies: Set by Firebase to keep you logged in to your account securely. These are essential for the platform to function.
- Session cookies: Used to maintain your session state (e.g., which quiz you're in the middle of). These are deleted when you close your browser.
We do not use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels. If you disable cookies in your browser, some features of the platform (such as staying logged in) may not function correctly.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data, including the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data
- Request deletion of your data (see Section 6 above)
- Withdraw consent to data processing, where consent is the legal basis
- Object to certain types of data processing
